The Whanganui

The first film was made in 1991 and details the Whanganui River from its source to it emptying into the sea at Castlecliff and was presented by Poet Sam Hunt as he investigates the rich history of the Whanganui River, which was an important highway for Māori and Pākehā alike. 

Before colonisation, generations of Māori knew and named every bend and rapid. Hunt talks to local historians about the heyday of riverboats and steamboats, and to families who’ve farmed in the area for generations along with our Founder and Historian Arthur Bates, who explains the history behind the mysterious Bridge to Nowhere. 

The River in Question

The second film is about a beautiful unmodified river seen by some as a potential source of hydro electric power, by others as an irreplaceable piece of wild New Zealand.

Through native bush, farmland and remote gorges the film follows the Manganui-a-te-Ao from its source on the volcanic Mount Ruapehu to its meeting with the Whanganui River.

Rare blue duck, brown and rainbow trout and other natural values together with Maori history and legends, are explored through the eyes of the scientists, anglers and white water rafters who seek to protect this unique river.
