Description

In this colourful, no-holds-barred memoir Richard Steele charts his progress from rugged beginnings at Reporoa and Mamaku, through to owning the ‘upindicular’ and challenging Retaruke as well as his neighbouring Blue Duck Station, Richard reflects on schooling difficulties, getting started on the land, battling bovine TB and improving his land by extensive tree planting.

In 2025 Richard was awarded the King’s Service Medal of his work with the rural community. He has also helped establish the Ruapehu branch of Federated Farmers and the Rural Support Trust.
